SHILLONG:

Teachers of Pine Mount School on September 6 protested against the school principal Aiom Ksiar Diengdoh and demanded that she be removed.

The teachers carried out a black flag protest on the school premises after their demands were not heard by authorities.

The teachers raised the issue of the general meeting which was never held in spite of the teachers’ repeated request.

The teachers also alleged that the principal is never present in the school office during school hours rendering them helpless when they want to discuss issues regarding welfare of the school and the students.

“Requests for repairs of classrooms and classroom furniture are never entertained,” the teachers said in a letter written to the government.

The teachers also said that temporary/contractual teachers and staff are being appointed not in accordance with the school requirement.

“For example, a contractual teacher has been assigned to the KG section but we have been instructed by the authority not to give her any teaching classes,” the letter said.

They are also said that members of the managing committee are to be selected by the teachers, however, the authority has been appointing and removing the members according to her wishes.

The teachers also alleged that students and the school have lost many opportunities regarding participation in various programme and workshops held by government organisations as the invitations received are never intimated to us in time.

They also said that there have been many instances that the teachers and students were left in an embarrassing situation due to wrong information to attend such programmes.

“Due to the inefficiency and negligence of the school office, other schools have refused to invite our school for their various programmes and events as we do not respond to their invitation on time,” the teachers said.

The teachers also said that parents were questioning them regarding the fees that are being collected by the school.

They also said that over and above the school development fees which are notified by the government, various forms of fees are also being collected for which there is no accountability.

They also said that the request for providing dedicated security guards at all the entrances of the school for the safety of the children and the school in general has not been addressed.

“Request for appointment of a special educator for students with special needs and for a counsellor has not been paid heed to,” the teachers said.

According to the teachers, last year, during the first part of the ICSE examination (December 2021), a few of the new teachers and temporary teachers missed out on invigilation duty for which they were shamed in front of the Grade IV staff of the office which was very demoralising.

Recently too, the Class X students were openly shamed during assembly time which caused immense distress to them, the teachers said.

They demanded that the principal be removed and replaced with someone who will be sensitive to the needs of the teachers and the students and to improve the image of the school thereby bringing back the lost glory of the prestigious institution.

The teachers said that there has been a precedence of the principal being removed in 2000.
