SHILLONG:
A pregnant woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her residence at Mawlai Nongmali, with police trying to ascertain whether the woman had taken her own life or murdered.
The woman, identified as Stefani Lyngdoh Nonglait (30), was two months pregnant. She was found lying dead on her bed at her residence with Ligature mark on her neck. Her body was taken to NEIGRIHMS for post mortem.
According to the family members of the deceased, it is unlikely for Nonglait to take her own life because she was not someone who would go to that extent; she was fit and healthy – both physically and mentally, they claimed.
They further informed that she was married to a man, who they believed had murdered her, just a few months back and was carrying his child.
They stated that she would often reach out to her sister through messages, sharing stories about her husband’s alleged affairs with his previous wife.
The family members stated that when they were informed about the incident, they immediately rushed to her house and found her lying dead on the bed. They also found writings on the walls of her house – explaining the husband’s alleged affairs with another woman.
Refusing to believe the suicide angle, the family members claimed that there were no fans not beams for her to hang herself. “We suspect the husband must have strangled her to death with a rope,” said one of the family members, further stating that he had different versions of how he found her body.
The sister of the deceased has filed an FIR in connection with this case at Mawlai Police Station.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested the man believed to be the husband. “We are investigating the matter, and a case has been registered under Section 302 of IPC,” police said.
