Protest against poor health facilities

TURA:

Lack of specialist doctors and the surrounding filth in the vicinity of a medical institution has prompted student and social organisations of South Garo Hills to stage a two-day protest outside the Baghmara civil hospital for two consecutive days, this week.

A conglomeration of student and social organisations from the region held a protest on Thursday and Friday demanding from the government the appointment of specialists including paeditrician and a gynaecologist at the district hospital and basic amenities at the health centre.

To avail special medical needs for children and women, patients from South Garo Hills have no option but to travel all the way to distant Tura materinty hospital, Holy Cross hospital and Christian Hospital, or Jengjal, where a team of specialist paeditricians and gynaecologists have been providing special medical care for women and children for the past few years.

Complaints have been galore about the Baghmara hospital roof that has been experiencing leaks each time it rains and the lack of proper hygiene in the hospital toilets has become an eyesore for patients and visitors alike.

The absence of any proper toilet for the needs of patients who attend the OPD have also been raised by the protestors who came from organisations such as the GSU, ADE, GSMC, FKJGP, AHAM and AYWO.

These organization’s have warned that unless the government sits up and take notice and initiates prompt action, they wouldn’t hesitage to stag a second protest in the coming week, as well.
