Purabi Dairy distributor shot dead in Guwahati, Rs 2.5 lakh looted

The assailants, who were riding a Hero Honda Glamour, snatched the bag and fled in the direction of Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra immediately after committing the crime.

GUWAHATI:

Two unidentified bike-borne assailants shot dead a trader in broad daylight and snatched away Rs 2.5 lakh from him near Purabi Dairy at Punjabari Road around 12 noon on November 21.

The assailants, who were riding a Hero Honda Glamour, snatched the bag and fled in the direction of Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra immediately after committing the crime.

The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Bora (58), a distributor for the ‘Purabi Dairy’ run by West Assam Milk Co-operative Union Ltd (WAMUL). He hails from Bhagadattapur area of Kahilipara of the city. Bora who received serious injuries to his neck was immediately shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries at around 12.44 pm.

Bora, who hails from Kahilipara area of the city, was the sole bread earner of the family.

Later, the police recovered a blank cartridge of 9 MM pistol from neat the car of the deceased trader.

“He often deposits huge money at the ICICI Bank branch at Punjabari. Today also he was going in a four-wheeler to deposit Rs 2.50 in the bank. He was shot by the assailants at the time he parked the vehicle outside the bank,” a police official said while adding, “It is suspected that the would-be murderers knew about Bora’s routine and were waiting for him near the bank.”

The police registered a case at Dispur Police Station and is continuing the investigation based on CCTV camera footage.

“We are investigating the case. We will book the culprits soon,” said Harmeet Singh, commissioner of police, Guwahati city.

Meanwhile, a police source claimed that the police have got a clue to the assailants from an examination of the CCTV footage.

“We took CCTV footage from three different areas. The assailants were wearing black helmets. They used a 9 MM pistol in the crime. We were also able to get the number of the bike used in the crime,” the sources added.

In a statement, West Assam Milk Producer’s Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL) said Ranjit Bora was associated with WAMUL, as its distributor of milk and milk products for last 12 years. He was one of the established distributors of Purabi Dairy commanding a network of retailers in Kahilipara and Ganeshguri areas of the city.

“It was understood that as a part of his routine business activity, today Ranjit Bora went to deposit his sales proceeds in ICICI Bank located in front of the premises of Purabi Dairy. It was learnt that he went to the bank in his car at around noon when unidentified assailants shot him while he was inside his car,” the statement said.

“Subsequently, the police came and took him to GMCH where he was declared dead. The entire Purabi Dairy family is in a state of a shock given this horrific incident. The heartfelt condolences of Purabi Dairy are hereby extended to the members of the bereaved family,” it added.
