Rebellion in Congress over Garo Hills ticket allocation, Youth Congress issues warning

The Salmanpara, Gambegre, and Selsella constituencies appear to be the centres of conflict.

TURA:

The Garo Hills Congress youth wing has issued a warning and given the party’s high command a 24-hour deadline to replace candidates who recently joined the party and were given tickets, triggering trouble within the party over the distribution of tickets to candidates for the upcoming elections on February 27th.

The Salmanpara, Gambegre, and Selsella constituencies appear to be the centres of conflict. According to the Youth Congress, the Congress announced its first list of candidates on Wednesday and legitimate party members who requested for tickets were brushed over in favour of entrants from other parties.

It allotted the party ticket for Gambegre to sitting MLA and former NCP president, the Selsella ticket to Reynold M Sangma and the Salmanpara ticket to Sinbath Ch Marak.

“Saleng Sangma in Gambegre, Sinbath Ch Marak in Salmanpara and Reynold M Sangma in Selsella just joined the party to get the tickets at the last minute. What about the party loyalists who have worked dedicatedly for so long and had been preparing their field for the contest. This is undemocratic,” said the Youth Congress general secretary.

Speaking to the media at Tura Congress bhawan, Robert K Sangma, general secretary of the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, criticised the party high command for rejecting devoted party members who had long before sought for the ticket.

“We are giving the high command 24 hours to replace the candidates in Salmanpara, Gambegre and Selsella, otherwise we will strike, lock the offices up and stage protests outside Congress bhawan,” warned Robert Sangma.

The Youth Congress has also questioned the high command’s delay in allocating tickets to Resubelpara, Kharkutta and Rajabala.
