Resettlement of ‘Internally Displaced Bru People’ in three phases underway in Tripura

Notably, with the BJP coming to power in the state led by incumbent chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, a pact was signed between the state unit of BJP, Bru leaders, Centre and Mizoram government to resettle the Bru families in Tripura permanently.

AGARTALA:

The state government has commenced work on the second phase of the resettlement process of the ‘Internally Displaced Bru People’ (IDBP) in Tripura.

Stating that it is one of the priority schemes of the state government, Manas Dev, the Officer on Special Duty for Tripura Bru rehabilitation and relief project, on February 10, said, “The first instalment for the construction of individual houses has already been released, and it’s almost over. We have already started the second phase of the resettlement process.”

Dev reiterated that government initiative for the third and final phase is underway. “As there are some reserve lands, we are waiting for approvals from the forest department. Once it’s cleared, we will start the work for the ultimate phase of the project,” he added.

Presently, 1,000 permanent houses have been constructed, with financial aid like Rs 4 lakh fixed deposit and Rs 5000 financial assistance being doled out. Beneficiaries have already started residing in the houses and avail the financial benefits.

Dev shared data highlighting work for the second phase in three locations – West Kalajhari in Gomati district and Hampsapara and Bhandarima-Pushpaban Para in North Tripura – part of the 14 locations, including Dhalai, selected by the Tripura government for the rehabilitation of the Bru people.

The second phase has started only in two parts of North Tripura, where the targeted population is 1,327 families. In total, the second phase is for 2,934 families.

As per available details, a total of 1,607 families were targeted in the first phase at four places in North Tripura and Dhalai districts. Of these, 1,454 families have reported at the places. Rehabilitation of the remaining 153 families is underway.

Three instalments for house building were received by 987 families. The first and second instalments were received by 1,486 and 1,206 families, respectively.

Officials also informed that 6,959 families, comprising 37,136 Bru people, will resettle in Tripura permanently. That said, few Bru families are against the resettlement plan of the state government as they feel safer in their current location – Kanchanpur and Panisagar in North Tripura – citing issues of water crisis, livelihood, and security.

The Brus, also known as ‘Reangs’ are spread across Tripura and Mizoram, including southern Assam. In Mizoram, they are scattered in Kolasib, Lunglei and Mamit districts. In 1997, over 30,00 Brus fled from Mizoram to Tripura, following alleged violence. They were then given relief in Kanchanpur and Panisagar.
