SHILLONG:

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to have its special session to elect its new chairman on February 7.

The post had fallen vacant after the National People’s Party’s (NPP) MLA and member of the district council, Pynïaid Sing Syiem, resigned from the post after being appointed as the party’s chief whip.

Earlier on February 2, the NPP-led United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a coalition of ruling political parties in KHADC, had nominated the name of four-time MDC, Lamphrang Blah for the election to the post of Chairman.

On Thursday, chief executive member, Titosstarwell Chyne said that, post a meeting, the UDA had unanimously accepted Blah as the candidate and he will submit his nominations on Friday.

Meanwhile Blah thanked Syiem for paving the way for him to contest the poll and the UDA partners for extending support to him.

He also urged other members of the Council to support his candidature for the post of Chairman.

Blah, the MDC of Mawphlang-Diengïei constituency, left the Congress and joined the NPP in October last year, and unsuccessfully contested the bye elections to Mawphlang Assembly constituency.
