SHILLONG:
BJP state president Ernest Mawrie on August 30 said that Assam and Meghalaya have to take the chance given by the Centre to permanently put an end to the long pending boundary dispute.
“We have to thank the BJP government, which through the Home minister Amit Shah has given the liberty to all the NE States to resolve the interstate border disputes. No government has taken this initiative before. So we have to take the initiative. We have to take a chance that this is the only time we can end the border dispute,” Mawrie said.
He informed that the state party has had several meetings with the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“We have given a lot of suggestions to him that where the Khasi-Jaintia dominated areas should come to Meghalaya (and) he agreed in principle. You see (in order to resolve the) border dispute, there has to be a give-and-take policy,” he added.
Referring to incidents at Khanduli and Lapangap, Mawrie said, “It happened but from party side last time Assam CM called us and we have appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquillity so that we can solve and it will be a permanent solution not only just a media talk or just end in a high tea meeting. We want to solve this long pending issue.”
“We are lucky we have the CM from Meghalaya who is also taking initiative to solve the problem, especially from Assam. This is the time where we can solve the border dispute,” he added.
