State govt to engage with Centre to help Ukraine-returned students: CM

Chief Minister Sangma also admitted that the medical colleges, both in Shillong as well as Tura, are facing a slew of challenges even after 50 years of statehood and the state is yet to have a medical college of its own

SHILLONG:

Concerned over the fate of the students who have returned from Russian invasion-hit Ukraine, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, on May 27, said that the state government will engage with the Centre and the Ukrainian government through the Ministry of External Affairs to find a solution to the problems faced by the them.

“We will do our best to engage with the Centre and may be also with the Government of Ukraine through the Ministry of External Affairs to see what option we have for these students who are now facing the brunt of the war,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma told the press.

Many Indian students pursuing medical courses in Ukraine, who returned home following Russia’s invasion of that country in February, seem to be uncertain about going back to their universities.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sangma admitted that the medical colleges, both in Shillong as well as Tura, are facing a slew of challenges even after 50 years of statehood and the state is yet to have a medical college of its own.

“We are working at a very fast pace to find a solution because we have a lot of complications with the Shillong and Tura Medical college,” he said.

While the Shillong Medical College exists only on paper, the construction of the Tura Medical College has not made any significant progress. “I recently had a review of that,” the chief minister added.
