Statue of former Meghalaya chief minister Dr D.D Lapang unveiled in front of Ri Bhoi College

The event was graced by Dr Lapang himself, along with his family members. Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Chief Minister, attended as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Mayral Born Syiem, local MLA of Nongpoh, as the guest of honour, and Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, as a special guest. Charles Marngar, MLA of Mawhati, among others, also attended.

To honour the significant contributions to mankind and the advancement of education in Ri Bhoi by veteran politician and public leader Dr D.D Lapang, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the Young Mind organisation unveiled the statue of Dr Lapang in front of Ri Bhoi College on Tuesday.

The event was graced by Dr Lapang himself, along with his family members. Prestone Tynsong, Deputy Chief Minister, attended as the Chief Guest, accompanied by Mayral Born Syiem, local MLA of Nongpoh, as the guest of honour, and Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, as a special guest. Charles Marngar, MLA of Mawhati, among others, also attended.

The programme, led by Isynei Hinge, President of the Young Mind Organization, and C.L Masharing, featured insights from Nicky Kharthangmaw, who highlighted Dr Lapang’s contributions to Ri Bhoi District and Meghalaya, particularly in the education sector.

Dr DD Lapang, born on April 10, 1933, in Nongjri Village, Ri-Bhoi District, received his education from various institutions in the region. He served as a teacher, and typist, and held other positions before entering politics in 1972. Dr Lapang served as Chief Minister five times between 1992 and 2009.

Dr Lapang has been recognised with several honours and awards throughout his career, including honorary doctorates and awards for his service. He expressed gratitude to the Young Mind Organization for acknowledging his contributions and shared his commitment to public service.

Speakers at the event praised the Young Mind Organization for recognising Dr Lapang’s services, which began with his efforts to establish Ri Bhoi District. They urged the organisation to continue its endeavours for the betterment and welfare of the people in the district.
