Differentiating itself from regular markets, the evening market will host a variety of stalls and activities featuring food, arts, crafts, and music. The aim is to engage visitors while supporting the local community.

SHILLONG:

The Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with Meghalayan Age Ltd., is set to kick off an evening market at Ward’s Lake (Nan Polok) in Shillong, running from January 19 to March 31, 2024. The market will open Monday to Saturday from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Evening markets, recognised for their impact on local economies, are being introduced by the Meghalaya Tourism Department to provide a platform for local entrepreneurs, craftsmen, farmers, and artists.

Differentiating itself from regular markets, the evening market will host a variety of stalls and activities featuring food, arts, crafts, and music. The aim is to engage visitors while supporting the local community.

Vendors will rotate over three months, allowing guests to interact with various entrepreneurs. The market will also include art and photography exhibitions and curated experiences to highlight local talent. Additionally, it will serve as a trade hub with a farmer’s market selling organic produce, processed agro products, and handmade crafts.

To cater to families, a children’s play zone and experiences will be set up. The musical backdrop will be provided by the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP), showcasing local talent.

Tickets priced at Rs 100 per person can be purchased at Ward’s Lake Gate 2 & 3, with free entry for children below 10 years. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to organisations and institutions.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the winter season by strolling around Ward’s Lake and experiencing authentic Meghalaya offerings.
