Traditional heads, KSU raise concerns over mass migration of Manipuris to Shillong

The meeting decided that the two relief centres in the area, i.e., Madanrting, Shillong, and Lapalang, Shillong, of the Kuki Community, should be under the supervision and control of the government.

SHILLONG:

Traditional heads and the Khasi Students’ Union have written to the Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, on the mass migration of people from Manipur to Shillong following the ethnic clashes in Manipur recently.

The traditional heads comprise those of the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Nongthymmai Pyllun, Dorbar Shnong Madanryting, Dorbar Shnong Umpling, Dorbar Shnong Nongkyndong, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Shillong Mihngi circle, and Nongthymmai circle.

The local bodies and the students’ bodies had a meeting recently at Nongthymmai, Shillong, and expressed deep concern for the prevailing law and order in the state of Manipur.

The meeting decided that the two relief centres in the area, i.e., Madanrting, Shillong, and Lapalang, Shillong, of the Kuki Community, should be under the supervision and control of the government.

The gathering unanimously appealed to the people of Manipur to come to an understanding and shun violence because peace and tranquilly will be back in the state and such clashes will not lead to any solution but instead will aggravate more losses of lives and property.

The meeting states that all Dorbar Shnong shall make a public announcement that the landlord should inform their respective Dorbar of any new entrant to the locality, especially those coming from outside the state, before they allow them to rent their premises or enter into any agreement.

The traditional heads and the KSU stated that Non-registration of displaced people coming to the state will enable the displaced people to stay permanently in Shillong and other areas of the state.

In this connection, they have urged the state mechanism to make a sincere effort to register them so that they can leave the state of Meghalaya when normalcy returns in Manipur.
