SHILLONG:
United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh suggested that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) should investigate the Mukroh firing in West Jaintia Hills on November 22.
Addressing a gathering on November 22 at the UDP office, he said that the party had been planning to formally introduce its candidates for the upcoming elections in 2023, but that has been postponed.
He stated that the reason was due to the unfortunate incident at Mukroh, where one of our UDP members served as the constituency representative.
He stated that he also called Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui who visited the site to get details on the incident.
“The decision by the party will be taken after the Home Minister gives an explanation to the senior leaders of the party and appropriate measures will be taken,” Lyngdoh said.
Extending his condolences to the families of the victims in the Mukroh firing, he termed it as a barbaric act of the Assam Police.
“We strongly condemn this and we urge the government to take strong action and initiate an NIA enquiry in this incident,” he said.
Lyngdoh informed that a delegation of the party will also visit Mukroh.
Meanwhile, a two-minute silence was observed as a mark of reverence to the departed souls.
