UDP in number-crunching huddle

UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh had said that he wanted the party to no longer be kingmaker, but king.

SHILLONG:

A day after the polling ended for the Meghalaya Assembly, the United Democratic Party (UDP) got into a huddle in the city, estimating the number of seats the party is likely to win on March 2 when votes are counted.

As per exit polls predictions, the UDP is expected to win around 8–10 seats.

“We are also assessing the exit polls and what will be the likely scenarios in case the predictions are spot on,” a source said.

According to the source, the UDP has two options – either go with the existing Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) or form an alternative alliance so that it can have more say in governance.

The source informed that in the event of MDA 2.0 happening, the UDP will have to play a secondary role to the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“But if we can cobble up an alternative alliance, we can have a bigger say there,” the source informed.

It may be mentioned that UDP, which claimed to be the largest regional party in the state during campaigning, has been vocal about wanting to lead the government after the election.

UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh had said that he wanted the party to no longer be kingmaker, but king.

When asked if he agreed with the exit poll predictions Lyngdoh replied in the negative.

On whether the UDP was ready to go with MDA 2.0, the party chief said that they will take a call on the matter only after March 2.

On the option of stitching an alternative alliance so that the party has more bargaining power, Lyngdoh said they will cross the bridge when they come to it.
