Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, on March 28, questioned the style and functioning of the police department and demanded accountability for the alleged killing of ex-militant, late Cheristerfield Thangkhiew in 2021.
Questioning the “inability” of the police to arrest Thangkhiew alive, Basaiawmoit sarcastically said, this was the same police force who had neutralised the proscribed militant groups – Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC).
It may be mentioned that the ex-HNLC leader was killed in an encounter on the 13th of August, 2021 at his residence in Mawlai Kyntonmassar, following which an independent inquiry was initiated and the report tabled in the floor of the house.
