Youths, thrashed over witchcraft suspicion in Mawsynram, demand justice

Recalling their harrowing experience, one of the youths said that they were blindfolded and tied up before being thrashed by the villagers even as they kept pleading with them to let them go

SHILLONG:

Four youths from the Upper Shillong area, who were allegedly assaulted by a group of villagers over suspicion of them practising menshohnoh (witchcraft) under Mawsynram constituency, on January 8, have urged the police to bring the culprits to book.

Speaking to the press on January 25, the youths – Bankhrawnam Thangkhiew, Seibor Kharbudon, Shanbor Syiemlieh and Khotsbunlang Nongnengdaloi – said that they had filed an FIR against the villagers with the East Khasi Hills Police Station on January 12 but no action was taken against the alleged perpetrators.

Recalling their harrowing experience, one of the youths, Kharbudon, said that they were blindfolded and tied up before being thrashed by the villagers even as they kept pleading with them to let them go. “They even threatened to burn us alive,” he said, speaking to the press.

The youths added that they couldn’t narrate their ordeal earlier as they were recovering from their injuries.
