Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh

SHILLONG:

Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on August 24 spoke on the chaos that took place earlier in the day at the public hearing held by Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board for the expansion of Meghalaya Cements Ltd plant at Thangksai Lumshnong in East Jaintia Hills.

She stated that initially ‘All necessary procedures were in place. The hearing was however relocated when things were out of control.’

‘A violent fraction of the crowd went so far as to threaten to set the tents on fire and engage in other disorderly behavior. And hence tear gas firing was ordered in order to get that under control.’

She stated that the majority of those hurt were mostly members of the police force; nearly 9 of them were hurt as a result of the few unruly protestors that showed up. One individual was held, but things are now under control, and the hearing was set despite protesters interfering with it throughout.
