WILLIAMNAGAR:
A 50-year-old man, who was taken into custody by East Garo Hills police for alleged sexual assault on minor girls, was found hanging inside the Williamnagar police station on Friday night.
The accused, Jitman Sangma, from Rongsak village, was apprehended by Chiading police after a family filed a complaint accusing him of sexually assaulting a minor girl. Jitman Sangma, who practiced local medicine and claimed to be a self-styled “Oja,” allegedly sexually assaulted a minor girl by pretending to apply medicine to her body.
Following the complaint, he was taken into custody on Thursday and was being held in the lock-up of Williamnagar police station while awaiting investigation. On Friday, another minor victim of Jitman Sangma came forward to file a second complaint, accusing him of penetrative sexual assault.
According to SP Siddarth Ambedkar, “He was inside the lock-up, and around 9:30 pm, the sentry on duty checked on him and found him hanging.” Using his vest as a makeshift rope, the accused had hanged himself from the lock-up ventilator. An investigation into the incident has been initiated.
