SHILLONG:
The National People’s Party (NPP) has initiated disciplinary action against a party legislator for having talks with other political parties.
“There are disciplinary proceedings going on against one of the MLAs. Possibilities of the MLA in question having talks with other political parties, cannot be ruled out,” said the party’s national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma, on May 20.
He also informed that the party’s disciplinary committee, headed by Nongstoin MLA, Macmillan Byrsat, is on the job. The chief minister, however, assured that all the party legislators are intact.
Recently, leader of opposition Mukul Sangma had alleged that many of the NPP MLAs will contest from other political parties in the upcoming 2023 Assembly elections.
“I don’t know about that and he (Mukul) will be the right person to answer that if at all some one is planning to switch. It is his statement, and he will be in the best position to answer it,” Conrad clarified.
The chief minister further informed that the party’s election committee will soon take a call on party tickets ahead of the 2023 Assembly polls. “This is not for me to say though I am the president of the party…as a process has to be followed,” he added.
He further added that, even if his wife, Mehtab Chandee, decides to contest the upcoming 2023 polls, she has to follow the procedures in place and apply for it.
“If she applies for a party ticket, the application will come to me and then I will take a decision,” said Conrad.
He, however, said that he doesn’t exactly know if at all she will apply for it. “It is for her to decide whether she wants to contest or not,” he said.
