Excise superintendent, headteacher arrested for bribe in Assam

Two cases have been registered in ACB police station against the two individuals and the bribe money has been confiscated.

GUWAHATI:

The sleuths of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (V&AC), on July 29, arrested two government officials – a Superintendent of Excise of Morigaon district and a Dealing Assistant of Block Elementary Education Office (NEEO) at Khowang in Dibrugarh district on graft charges.

In the first incident, the VAC sleuths caught red-handed superintendent of excise Barasha Bora Bordoloi while she was taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a person.

“Morigaon District Excise Superintendent, Barasha Borah Bordoloi, had demanded Rs 1 lakh as bribe from a person for converting his bar license from Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) ‘ON’ to IMFL ‘OFF’. Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant approached the superintendent of police, Morigaon, who in turn took up the matter with the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption for taking needful legal action,” an Assam Police statement read.

“A trap was laid near the office chamber of the officer situated in the office of the deputy commissioner, Morigaon, jointly by a team from the Vigilance and Anti- Corruption and Morigaon district police. Barasha Borah Bordoloi was caught red handed immediately after she accepted a bribe of Rs 20,000 from the complainant in her office chamber at 11.50 am,” the statement said.

The bribe money was seized from Barasha Borah Bordoloi in the presence of independent witnesses. An additional amount of Rs 20,000 has also been recovered from the bag of the public servant in her office chamber soon after trap operation. This amount has also been seized by the investigating officer of the case, the statement also said.

Special DGP GP Singh tweeted about the development, writing, “Our fight against corruption amongst government officers continues. VAC along with Morigaon Police trapped and arrested red handed Barsha Bora Bordoloi, District Excise Superintendent of Morigaon while accepting bribe money. Lawful action being taken.”

A case has been registered in ACB police station vide ACB PS case no 19/2022 under section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Barasha Borah Bordoloi.

In the second operation, the sleuths of VAC caught red-handed an office assistant of Khowang Block Elementary Education Office (BEEO) at Moran in Dibrugarh district on July 29 afternoon.

“Second action against corruption amongst government officers in one day. VAC trapped and arrested red-handed Nabajyoti Sarma, Dealing Assistant office at the BEEO, Khuwang, Dibrugarh while accepting bribe money. Lawful action being taken,” Singh said in another tweet.

The arrested, Nabojyoti Sarma, is the headteacher of Phatika Chuwa LP School who works in the office of the Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO), Khowang, Dibrugarh. He had demanded a bribe from the complainant for supplying a copy of his service book.

“A trap was laid by a team from the VAC near the office of the BEEO, Khowang. Nabojyoti Sarma was caught red-handed immediately after accepting a demanded bribe from the complainant at 1.30 pm,” an official statement said.

“The tainted bribe money was seized from Nabojyoti Sarma in the presence of independent witnesses. A case has been registered in ACB police station vide ACB PS case no 20/2022 under section 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against Nabojyoti Sarma,” it added.
