Garo Hills bridge collapses to weight of sugar

TURA, April 16: A crucial bridge connecting West Garo Hills to South Garo Hills district has collapsed after two heavily loaded trucks carrying sugar tried to pass over it on Tuesday morning near Dimapara area.

The 60 meter iron bridge at Bagla, 6 kms from Dalu, NH 217 road that many travel on to head to Baghmara in South Garo Hills via Karonggre- Dimapara by bypassing Barengapara and Dalu towns.

Heavy vehicles are restricted from passing over the bridge.

Two 18 wheeled trucks fully loaded with sugar were attempting to cross over the bridge at the same time when it collapsed under the sheer weight of the vehicles leaving bags of sugar strewn all over and into the Bagla stream below.

This huge cargo of sugar, weighing several tons and heading into South Garo Hills has raised suspicion of a smuggling racket as the consignment was being taken through this link road, and not via the main highway in Dalu.

Dozens of trucks carrying sugar are making their way into the border region of South Garo Hills and South West Khasi Hills from Assam, every night, allegedly carrying sugar for smuggling into Bangladesh.
