Harijan colony at Them Iew Mawlong

SHILLONG:

The state government has decided to invite the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) for discussion on the proposed relocation of residents of Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong on November 15 or 16.

This was informed before the Meghalaya High Court during a hearing on the matter here on November 8.

In its order, the division bench comprising Justice W Diengdoh and Justice B Bhattacharjee said the attorney general (AG) has submitted that a proposal has come from the state government to call upon the respondents (HPC) for a meeting so as to resolve the dispute or any pending issues between the parties once and for all.

In this regard, the AG has also submitted that the proposed meeting is slated to be held either on November 15 or 16. It is also submitted that if the respondents are unable to attend the meeting on those dates, it may propose other dates to allow the parties to meet and amicably settle such issues.

The bench said that at this stage it would not proceed further but would allow the parties to meet as proposed.

β€œThe outcome of the meeting is to be informed and placed before this court in the form of a report. Accordingly, this matter is now listed to be heard in the first week of December,” it added.

On September 29, the state government had informed the high court that it had agreed to increase the individual plot sizes as requested by the residents of the Harijan Colony.

It may be mentioned that the government in its blueprint has proposed to relocate the 342 families to the plot of land belonging to the Shillong Municipal Board.
