Speaker Thomas Sangma

SHILLONG:

Speaker Thomas Sangma inspected the Assembly Building at Mawdiangdiang on March 13, and said that a new high-power committee will be constituted headed by the speaker to expediate the work on the completion of the Assembly building at the earliest.

Speaking to media persons on a possible completion time for the Assembly building, Sangma said, “First of all, the new design of the dome is yet to be approved by IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati, and I have instructed the implementing agency, the PWD to expedite the approval of the new design without which the work cannot start,” Sangma said.

Sangma also expressed satisfaction at the work, stating that the left and right wing of the building are almost complete, except for the work on the dome that had collapsed last year whose new design is yet to be approved by the above mentioned institutions.

Replying to the charges of corruption allegations on the construction of the Assembly building, and if any action will be initiated on the matter,  Sangma said that he is not aware of any such allegations of corruption, and if there are any, his office will be very transparent in this regard, and take necessary steps.

On the question if the work will be given to the same company, he said, “When the work are awarded to any firm or construction company, they have to fulfill certain agreements, memorandums, so without which I cannot just say that such contractors, agencies can be removed.”
