Seized heroin in Khanapara and Narengi.

GUWAHATI:

Intensifying its crackdown on drug traffickers, Assam Police, in two separate operations, seized 500 gm and 8.9 gm of heroin from Khanapara and Narengi, respectively, on February 14.

The consignments are priced at Rs 4 crore and Rs 7 lakh (approximately), respectively, in the international market.

Five persons, identified as Altaf Hussain, Ajmal Khan, Abdul Matleb, Munir Rahman and Salil Khan, were arrested in connection with the seizure at Khanapara. All the accused are from Manipur, the police said.

Speaking to The Meghalayan, joint commissioner of Guwahati Police, Partha Sarathi Mahanta said that the operation was conducted after receiving specific information about drugs being trafficked in an SUV vehicle from Imphal.

“We received reliable information on the movement of five persons from Imphal to Guwahati with the consignment. We intercepted their vehicle at Khanapara and seized the consignment worth be Rs 4 crore in the international market,” said Mahanta.

Taking cognizance of the matter, Assam Chief Minister in a tweet said that there is an inter-state drug supply line that originates in Manipur, Nagaland and other places, which are closely linked to Myanmar.

In another operation, the police team also seized 8.30 gm of heroin from a house at Anukul Basti in the Narengi area on Monday. One person, identified as Haider Ali, was arrested in connection with the seizure.
