The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has written to the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) expressing their resentment at the re-appointment of an individual after his superannuation.
In the letter to the Managing Director, MTDC, Roy Kupar Synrem, HYC general secretary, said that Puranjan Das, Chief General Manager of the corporation, was re-appointed on a contractual basis after his superannuation on March 31 this year.
According to Synrem, the corporation on March 31, 2023, reappointed him as the Chief General Manager on a contract basis with effect from April 1, 2023, to September 30, 2023, on a monthly pay of Rs. 1,57,968, with the option that his contract may be renewed again after the said period of six months by the corporation.
“The HYC strongly objects to this act of re-appointment of the above-named retired person by the MTDC and more so to paying him the same amount of salary as paid during his service. Secondly, this practise of appointment of retired employees will create a situation of non-availability of employment opportunities for other deserving candidates and youths in our state,” the HYC general secretary stated in the letter.
According to Synrem, this practise will deprive deserving, educated youths of the opportunity to get employment in such a government-owned entity in the state.
Demanding to terminate the contract immediately, the HYC threatened, failing which it would be forced to organise a protest against the corporation as this involved depriving the local educated and deserving youth of job opportunities.
