SHILLONG:

The Khliehriat circle of the Jaintia National Council(JNC) claimed that the East Jaintia Hills office of the Tourist Officer and Information Center workers allegedly overlooked working.

According to a statement published on August 31, Mebanteilang Sukhlain, the general secretary of the Khliehriat circle, visited the Tourist Officer and Information Center in East Jaintia Hills after receiving reports that the office was vacant.

Stating that there are people who frequent the office to seek information on tourism-related issues in the district, Sukhlain said, “The organization found that the door of the office is open but there is no peon, and we came to know that the officer in charge of the office did not come to work for nearly a year. We demand that the officer give an explanation as to why he or she fails to attend office.”

If there were no employees at such an agency, he questioned the district’s efforts to promote tourism.

Sukhlain argued that the district has to build a number of tourist attractions because doing so will eventually benefit the locals.

He questioned if the government paid “absentee” employees in this context.

To take action on the situation, the group met with A. Baranwal, the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills.
