Lanong blames EVM, ‘unknown reasons’ for Nongkrem loss

“Even the United States has reverted to ballot papers since they found out that the EVMs are not reliable,” he said, while also apportioning a part of the blame on other reasons without being specific.

SHILLONG:

Senior politician and nominated Member of District Council (MDC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Bindo M Lanong has blamed electronic voting machines (EVMs) as one of the reasons for his defeat in the recent Assembly elections.

“Even the United States has reverted to ballot papers since they found out that the EVMs are not reliable,” he said, while also apportioning a part of the blame on other reasons without being specific.

It may be mentioned that the former MLA of the then Malki-Nongthymmai constituency contested the election from Nongkrem as an independent candidate.

Lanong, while speaking to reporters on Wednesday, expressed shock that he raked in very few votes, and is yet to process his loss.

“I did not expect that the result would be that way. We had prepared for more than a year for the elections. I had won eight elections in the past (both MDC and MLA) where there has never been such preparation,” the former legislator said.

Lanong said that in the run-up to the elections, he made large donations to sports clubs and many dorbar shnongs in kind and development schemes as a nominated MDC of the KHADC.

“I have never spent so much like I did in this election. I was surprised when the results were declared and I got the least number of votes. I polled only 135 votes,” the senior politician said, who till recently was with the United Democratic Party.

According to Lanong, his team during the elections consisted of 150–200 members.

“Where have they all gone? I got only 135 votes,” Lanong questioned.

He also said that there may be some yet-to-be-known reasons for his loss.
