AGARTALA:

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, on August 11, said that the construction work of the integrated check post on the bank of River Feni would be completed by the end of the year, which is also when the Maitri Setu, also called Gateway of Northeast, will be opened for traffic movement.

Maitri Setu is a 150-metre bridge on Feni River which shares the international boundary with Sabroom in Tripura’s South district with neighbouring Bangladesh. After it is opened, the rest of the Northeastern states can import or export goods by using Chittagong port in Bangladesh.

Saha was visiting Sabroom where he inaugurated various development projects and construction works including a Tertiary Waste Treatment Center. The Center has been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.49 crore under the Swachh Bharat Mission scheme.

At the event, Saha said the center is the largest tertiary waste treatment center in the North Eastern region, and added, “The cleaning staff engaged in the maintenance of this center should have regular health check-ups.”

There is a system for separating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, and apart from that there is also a system to make natural fertilizer from waste.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a passenger shed adjacent to Sabroom College which has been constructed at a cost of Rs 4 lakh 30 thousand.

Saha next visited the construction work of the integrated Check Post on the bank of River Feni and discussed the progress of the construction work with the concerned officials. While visiting Maitri Setu, he told reporters that the integrated Check Post of Sabroom will be operational by December this year and Maitri Setu will be opened for traffic movement.

He also informed that he will soon talk to the Prime Minister and the Union Railway Minister about sanctioning a superfast express train from Sabroom.
