SHILLONG:

The North-Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) on October 26 shouted slogans against NEHU Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla while he was attending a programme on the university campus.

The NEHUSU members had initially marched to the vice-chancellor’s office, but not finding him there went to the venue in Kiang Nongbah Guest House where the North East Philosophy Teachers meeting was under way with the state Education Minister Rakkam Sangma also attending.

The student union of the university entered the venue and shouted slogans against the vice-chancellor and after being convinced by the organisers of the programme left the venue only to confront him later over several issues the students are facing when the meet got over.

The state Education minister through the organisers had asked the agitating students to allow the meet to go on smoothly and to meet the vice-chancellor after the function.

According to NEHUSU, the students were peeved that various issues put forth by them before Shukla like the marking system, issues related to hostels and the substandard food served there, providing improved WiFi facility to students and School of Technology (SOT) library in the university and the appointment of Rohit Prasad as the Technical Officer Senior Consultant without proper procedure.

The NEHUSU said that on various occasions they have reminded the vice-chancellor for the setting up of the SOT library since the central library of the university is too far.

Banpynbiang Riang, NEHUSU general secretary said that the appointment of Prasad without advertising for the post is like snatching away an employment opportunity for the locals.

“If there is such a post, put out an advertisement that way there will be fair competition. But to happen this way the union will not allow it,” Riang said.

When confronted by the students on why he was appointed to the post, the vice-chancellor could not give any clear-cut reply.
