GUWAHATI:

Assam Cricket Association (ACA), on February 24, barred Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Under-19 cricket team and its captain, Ronit Akhtar, including the manager-cum-coach, Satyabrata Chakraborty from playing the game, over accusation of match-fixing.

A committee constituted to conduct an investigation on the matter, said that match fixing took place during a match between NFR and Jorhat team in the JK Baruah Under-19 Trophy, held at Golaghat, recently.

“We have decided to take stern action against the NFR U-19 team, its captain and coach. They have disrespected the spirit of the gentleman’s game and brought shame to the Association,” Debajit Saikia, secretary of ACA, said.

The concerned match sparked a massive controversy when the NFR team gave away the match in favour of the Jorhat team by underperforming.

Interestingly, the Silchar U-19 team lodged the complaint with ACA, alleging match-fixing during the said match. The former was run over by the Jorhat team, who until then, was at the top.

While the team and Akhtar have been barred from playing for the next three years, Chakraborty has been banned from any cricketing activities for life.
