Hill state leaders and their sacrifices that helped Meghalaya attain statehood were remembered in an event organised to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Statehood of Meghalaya at New Nongstoin Playground on April 26.

Speaking at the one-day event, chairman of State Law Commission and Nongstoin legislature, Macmillan Byrsat, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, highlighted how, in the last 50 years, the state has progressed and developed in fields of education, water supply, road connectivity and tourism, among others.

Addressing the gathering, Byrsat also exuded confidence that the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government will resolve the border issue, Inner Line Permit (ILP), peace talk with militants, Landowner Act, and Harijan Colony issue to mark the 50 years of Statehood. He also urged the students to work hard and be sincere about their responsibility and grow up to be worthy citizens of the state and the nation as a whole.

Organised by the office of the deputy commissioner (DC) West Khasi Hills District, Nongstoin in collaboration with other departments, the do was attended by deputy commissioner of West Khasi Hills, PD Sangma, retired commissioner, secretary and former DC, S Kharlyngdoh, ex-MLA and ex-MDC, Syiem of Hima Nongstoin, EP Syiem, ADC, EACs, DSP, district officers, traditional heads, principals and teachers of different schools in Nongstoin, students and general public.

The highlights of the day included a song presented by students of Nongstoin College, the reading of two winning poems, releasing of a musical video (a traffic video) and prize distribution by the chief guest to winners of the marathon and poetry competition. Other activities included a baby show, an exhibition, a food display. The do ended with a musical performance.

Other dignitaries who spoke at the event included EK Dkhar, MCS EAC, CWR Sangma, MCS EAC, PD Sangma, DC, EP Syiem, Syiem of Hima Nongstoin, O Massar, DSP (Crime), and M Diengdoh.
