One of four arrested drug users from Nongpoh kills self in Shillong hospital

One of the alleged drug addicts, Ravi Sunar, committed suicide in a washroom of the Shillong Civil Hospital, the police said.

SHILLONG/NONGPOH:

One of the four persons arrested by Nongpoh police on charges of drug abuse committed suicide at the Shillong Civil Hospital at 9:30 am, on January 27.

Identified as Ravi Sunar, the 28-year-old took the extreme step by hanging himself in one of the Under Trial Cell’s washroom of the hospital, the police said.

Earlier, busting a major drug syndicate in Downgate area of Nongpoh, the police had arrested the four on the night of January 26.

While three persons were identified – Baiakmenlang Tiewsoh, Ravi Sunar, Amanlang Khongshei, one’s identity is yet to be ascertained, the police had said.

On Wednesday, members of a youth body – Seng Samla, while patrolling the area, had caught the said persons taking drugs. Lumlang Shylla, president of the youth body, informed The Meghalayan that soon after the Nongpoh police was informed and they, during a one-the-spot search operation, seized a can of cocaine from them. The Police thereupon booked them and registered cases a under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotrophic Substances Act.

Speaking to the press, Shylla and Remijus Lyngdoh, one of the members of the body, said that the dorbar shnong of Nongpoh had been keeping a close watch on the suspected drug peddlers and addicts in the area. They also informed that there are close to 50 to 60 youths in the area are taking drugs.

The youth club members have demanded strict action against the accused.
