KAS questions Centre on Khasi language 8th schedule inclusion demand

On the 29th and 30th of September, he stated that a national seminar in Khasi language will be held in New Delhi, where all Khasi intellectuals from throughout the country will attend and talk about their thoughts and ideas for promoting the Khasi language.

SHILLONG:

President of the Khasi Author Society(KAS) Prof. D. R. L. Nonglait on August 31 expressed his views on the inclusion of the Khasi Language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, saying that the demands have been ongoing for the last four decades and that he is hoping for the attention of the centre as well as the media so that the demands can be heard.

On the 29th and 30th of September, he stated that a national seminar in Khasi language will be held in New Delhi, where all Khasi intellectuals from throughout the country will attend and talk about their thoughts and ideas for promoting the Khasi language.

When asked if a mass protest is necessary to push the government to approve the assembly resolutions, he responded affirmatively and stated that large rallies and sometimes even taking it to the streets is necessary.

He said, despite the fact that the Ministry of Office had not provided us with an explanation for the delay, the state government was compelled to adapt this resolution as a result of these activities.

‘The state government always claims to be following up, but since there has been no response from the central government—for example, when PM Modi spoke at the Independence Day celebration, he made no mention of the state of Meghalaya—and we haven’t seen any reports of Amit Shah speaking on the issue, I’m not sure if they have. It is up to them how they make the demands of the 8th schedule heard,’ he added.
