Opium worth Rs 10 crore from seized New Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express in Guwahati on Thursday

In its continued crusade against drugs in Assam, the Government Railway Police (GRP) seized 10.11 kg of opium worth Rs 10 crore from New Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express at around 7.30 am on July 21, and arrested four persons in connection with the seizure.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sujit Kumar (28) from Motihari, Bihar, Nitesh Kumar (23) from Sheohar, Bihar, Naina Devi (45) from Sheodhar, Bihar and Durga Devi (23) from Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

According to Superintendent of Railway Police (SRP), BL Meena, the consignment, which was carried in 10 packets and was brought from Dimapur, was supposed to be taken to Howrah.

“Based on the information, a special team of GRP Guwahati conducted a search on coach No B4 and B9 of the train No 20503 (Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express) and apprehended four persons with suspected opium,” Meena said.

“The weight of the opium pest is 10.11 kg and the market value is Rs 10 crore,” he added.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at GRP Police Station, Guwahati vide case No 1-2/22 under section 17©/29 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 in this connection.
