Police ASI arrested on Rs 25k graft charge in Assam’s Goalpara

Identified as Sabin Pal Das, the ASI had demanded a bribe of Rs 35,000 from a person for mitigating favourably the pending case lodged at Matia police station.

GUWAHATI:

Sleuths of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (VAC) wing of Assam Police, on August 7, caught an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 from a person in Goalpara district of the state.

Identified as Sabin Pal Das, the ASI had demanded a bribe of Rs 35,000 from a person for mitigating favourably the pending case lodged at Matia police station.

“We don’t spare even our Assam Police personnel. Today, @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped & arrested red-handed, Sabin Pal Das, ASI of Matiya Police Station of @Goalparapolice within the police station complex while accepting bribe money. Lawful action is being taken,” Special DGP and VAC Director GP Singh said in a tweet.

In an official statement, the Assam Police gave a detailed explanation of how the events leading to the arrest of the ASI, unfolded.

“Unwilling to pay the bribe the complainant approached the VAC for legal action and lodged an FIR. Based on the complaint, a team of VAC laid a trap at Matia police station and caught ASI Sabin Pal Das red-handed after he accepted the bribe of Rs 25,000 from the complainant at about 2.45 pm. The bribe money was recovered from ASI Sabin Pal Das and seized, maintaining all formalities in the presence of independent witnesses,” the statement said.

A case vide ASB PS no 25/2022 under section 7(a) of Prevention Of Corruption Act 1988 has been registered against Das and further legal action will be taken.
