Ri Bhoi DC to probe into road construction by Assam

The JAC led by chairman Purningstar Shabong, along with members earlier submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner regarding the alleged illegal construction of road by the Assam government.

NONGPOH:

Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi, Arpit Upadhyaya, has assured the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Hima Sohïong of inquiry into complaints of Assam government undertaking constructions at Nongwah Mawtamur under Hima Sohïong

The JAC led by chairman Purningstar Shabong, along with members earlier submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner regarding the alleged illegal construction of road by the Assam government.

The JAC submitted the memorandum after residents of Mawtamur village complained of the construction, which began in 2021, and has now reached the centre of the village. In addition, the villagers stated that the Assam government has also begun construction of a forest department office and nursery for tree saplings in the area.

The memorandum further states that residents of the village have been repeatedly threatened by Assam police personnel and forest guards.

The residents have thus requested police deployment in the Nongwah Mawtamur region, fearing a situation similar to Mukroh village, where Assam police, in a botched operation, gunned down five middle-aged farmers.

Shabong has stated that a letter to the state government on this matter elicited no answers.
