LIVE UPDATES: UDP wins Sohiong

SHILLONG: 

Counting is under way at the State Central Library, on May 13, as thousands of supporters, including the six candidates vying for the Sohiong seat, wait in anticipation for the results to be declared.

UPDATES:

11.28 am: Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has won the Sohiong seat after defeating his closest rival, Samlin Malngiang of the National People’s Party (NPP) by 3422 votes, including postal votes.

His total cumulative votes stand at 16679 while Malngiang’s total vote count was 13257.

WATCH: 

11:30 am: The family members of former MLA (L) HDR Lyngdoh have expressed joy and gratefulness as UDP candidate Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah, who is also HDR’s nephew, is leading in Sohiong constituency by over 2600 votes after the end of the fifth round of counting.

WATCH: 

11:06 am: After the end of the sixth round of counting, UDP is still leading by 3321 votes. Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah of UDP secured 15796 while NPP’s Samlin Malngiang got 12475 votes.

10:42 am: After the end of the fifth round of counting, UDP is still leading by 2689 votes. Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah of UDP secured 13146 while NPP’s Samlin Malngiang got 10457 votes.

10:18 am: After the end of the fourth round of counting, UDP is still leading by 2815 votes. Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah of UDP secured 10833 votes while NPP’s Samlin Malngiang secured 8018 votes.

10:00 am: ‘Disheartened’ supporters of the National People’s Party (NPP) are left in a state of shock as their rival – United Democratic Party (UDP) is leading by a huge margin.

WATCH: 

9:53 am: After the end of round three of counting, UDP’s Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah is still leading by 2458 votes; he is at 8467 while NPP’s Samlin Malngiang is at 6009 votes.

ALSO WATCH: 

9:37 am: After the end of the second round of counting, UDP is still leading with 1903 votes. UDP’s Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah secured 5972 while NPP’s Samlin Malngiang is trailing with 4069 votes.

9:20 am: UDP’s Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah is leading. After the end of the first round of counting, Thabah secured 3081 votes and NPP’s Samlin Malngiang is trailing with 2060 votes.

9:00 am: Anxiousness fills the air as thousands of supporters gather outside the State Central Library on May 13.

8:30 am: Counting begins.

8.00 am: Hundreds of people wait in anticipation for the results of the adjourned bye election to the Sohiong Assembly Constituency to be declared later today.

Screen indicating authorised ‘Round-wise Declaration’ of results by the Returning Officer RO has been arranged at the Counting Centre to prevent presumptive “half-baked results” being transmitted. “Only RO announced results May kindly be deemed as authentic results,” Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) FR Kharkongor.
