SHILLONG:

The Synjuk ki Waheh Shnong East Jaintia Hills District (SWSEJHD) has issued a two-week ultimatum to the state government demanding immediate repairs for the deplorable condition of National Highway NH-6 and the Sutnga-Saipung Road in East Jaintia Hills.

During its Executive Committee meeting on September 7, at Khliehriat Community, the SWSEJHD expressed grave concerns regarding the appalling state of these roads and unanimously resolved to set a strict deadline for the State Government to take action.

Hamrtus Nongtdu, the former JHADC Chief and current President of the SWSEJHD, pointed out that the NH-6, managed by the National Highway Authority of India from Soo-Mer to Malidor, is in an abysmal condition. He emphasised that this road is the primary lifeline connecting other northeastern states, including Mizoram, Tripura, parts of Manipur, and Barak Valley, Assam. Nongtdu went on to say, “The deplorable condition of these roads not only inconveniences commuters but also leads to frequent vehicle breakdowns and traffic jams on an almost daily basis.”

Expressing dismay, he added, “It is surprising that despite being well aware of the road’s condition, the government has failed to take any appropriate measures to address it.”

It is worth noting that last month, the SWSEJHD met with the Chief Minister and presented their concerns. Unfortunately, the meeting concluded with only promises and no tangible actions taken.

In response to this ongoing issue, the SWSEJHD has issued a stern warning that if the government fails to respond positively within the specified two-week timeframe, it will take independent action to address the problem.
