SHILLONG:

The Opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MLA George Lyngdoh on Thursday said that successive governments had never taxed food items.

The legislator said that this is the first time that tax has been imposed on food.

“Now we see that rice and other food items including curd are being taxed. This is actually illegal,” he said.

Criticising the government, Lyngdoh said that this is getting to the worst kind of situation in the economy.

He said that even for eating the citizens are being taxed. “What does the government expect us to be? Does it expect us to eat leaves or just air,” Lyngdoh said.

The MLA appealed to the general public to take a stand against it. “Until and unless the people of the country wake to such economic atrocities, the citizens will face real problems,” he added.

The public was already experiencing soaring school fees and unemployment and to burden them even further with taxes, especially on food, is uncalled for.

Lyngdoh said as a party they will register a protest against this move.
