Town committees to be constituted to ensure cleanliness under jurisdiction: KHADC

The decision was taken in compliance with the order passed by the Meghalaya High Court on February 16.

SHILLONG:

The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), on February 17, decided to constitute town committees which will look into the cleanliness and sanitation in areas of Shillong that falls under the jurisdiction of the Council.

“We have discussed the High Court order and have accordingly decided to take steps to form the town committees to look into the cleanliness of the areas under our jurisdiction,” said KHADC chief executive member Titosstarwell Chyne, post chairing a meeting of the executive committee on Thursday.

Earlier on February 16, the Court had directed the KHADC to constitute town committee in areas beyond the purview of the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to ensure cleanliness and hygiene within its territory.

On the direction to take immediate steps to clean and rejuvenate the Umshyrpi and Wahumkhrah rivers, the KHADC chief said that the council has decided to write to the state government for its clarification on a scheme sanctioned by the Centre for cleaning of these rivers.

“I feel we need to seek clarification from the government since the scheme has also included the ADC,” he added.
