Undeserving jackpot

Editor
This is in response to the article “Home Players hit jackpot” published on February 13, 2022. Although yesterday was a Saturday, I couldn’t sit in front of the TV to keep track of the IPL 2022 auction as I was busy meeting certain professional commitments (on a weekend, arghh…). But, on Sunday, a few minutes into The Meghalayan, and I felt like Harsha Bhogle, almost ready to pound the keyboard to tell the world who got the best deals, on social media.
I, however, wasn’t happy with Ishan Kishan bagging a Rs 15.25 crore deal from Mumbai Indians. Why? Because, in view of his recent T20 innings, Kishan doesn’t deserve so much moolah. If statistics of his T20 innings in 2021 are anything to go by, Kishan, in 14 T20 innings last year, scored a meagre 359 runs with a puny average of 27.6. If my memory serves me right, his performance in the T20s in last South African tour, too wasn’t ample, let alone good. Instead, I was rooting for Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar to lead in the auction. To some extent, they did, and got lucrative deals as well, but considering their exceptional form in the past few tours abroad, they definitely deserved better. Also the overseas cricketers like Pat Cummins and many others didn’t fetch enough to go at par with their status in world cricket But, then again, as in the words of Abba, “Money, must be funny, in the rich man’s world.”
