Leader of opposition Mukul Sangma

SHILLONG:

Leader of opposition Mukul Sangma has called upon the public to punish ‘corrupt politicians’ by voting against them in the upcoming 2023 polls.

“Only by punishing them you will make the corrupt politician realise that they need to change their ways of serving the people and must be honest to the ‘jaidbynriew’,” said the Songsak legislator, on May 17.

According to him, the state will “only witness overall destruction” if corrupt politicians are allowed to win elections by using money. “Make them spend during the elections and ensure they are defeated, that is the only mantra,” he further added.

Stating that the trend of using money power in polls is a dubious one, Mukul said if people win elections by the power of money, they are most likely to repeat the same exercise every five years.

“They will come back with money and buy the votes again. After the election, if they win, they will continue to replenish their expenditure in the election and go beyond the cost of the state and the voters. Eventually, they will resort to the same strategy of buying voters using money power.”

“I don’t want to name anybody but there are politicians, who now think that politics can be used as an instrument to further promote their monopoly in business and to rob business from others,” he said.

Stating that this is not a good sign, Mukul said, “We must understand the negativity of nepotism, favourtism and discrimination. When we are talking about the growth story of the state, its benefit must create equal opportunities for all, but is it happening, that is the million-dollar question.”

Meanwhile, the AITC leader said his party is determined to create itself as an effective platform for new fresh bloods who have sincere intent and commitment to join this challenging profession and make a difference.
