Ardent in top gear, preps for Council elections

Ardent Miller Basaïawmoit exuded confidence in the growing popularity of the VPP, which he expects will draw many potential candidates to seek party tickets.

SHILLONG:

The Voice of the People Party (VPP) president, Ardent Miller Basaïawmoit, said the party will draw lots for nominations for the 2024 district council elections in Khasi and Jaintia Hills if a surplus of candidates seek party tickets.

Basaïawmoit exuded confidence in the growing popularity of the VPP, which he expects will draw many potential candidates to seek party tickets.

Addressing his supporters in Smit, he said, “We won’t be biased. We will not lean towards anyone. We will draw lots, so that everything will be transparent.”

Basaïawmoit’s landslide surprise victory in Nongkrem  constituency continues to make ripples in the state. Candidates with money power, he said, lost in the polls to VPP.

VPP, ever since its inception in 2021, has presented itself as the wheat separated from the chaff of Meghalaya’s alleged morally impoverished political landscape.

Fresh from landmark victory, though, Basaïawmoit is keen on extracting the most from this momentum to create a real political movement that dismantles the many mafias of the state. At Smit, Basaïawmoit said rich candidates are only here to “snatch power” and “expand their businesses.”

Meanwhile, VPP will also organise a rally of gratitude at Polo Ground on March 18 at 11am to thank its supporters.

Basaïawmoit, who is party president, will lead the event, where the composer and singer of the party’s song Kongdeng Kongnah ha U Prah will also be felicitated.
