NPP hits out at TMC over pledge to scrap MoU

Tynsong said for decades the boundary issue had been an eyesore until the MDA government took it up and managed to resolve the dispute in six out of twelve areas of differences in the first phase.

SHILLONG:

Deputy Chief Minister and senior National People’s Party (NPP) leader Prestone Tynsong, on January 28, came down heavily on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over its pledge to scrap the border memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Meghalaya and Assam once it comes to power.

Addressing a public gathering during the general election meeting organised by the NPP at Madan Shad Maw Kharshiing in Mawngap under Mawphlang constituency, Tynsong said for decades the boundary issue had been an eyesore until the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, under the leadership of Conrad Sangma, took it up with his counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma and managed to resolve the dispute in six out of twelve areas of differences in the first phase.

“I have been in the government for a very long time and on many occasions, I had accompanied the then Chief Minister (Dr Mukul Sangma) for a meeting to resolve the boundary dispute, but the meetings always ended in ‘maintaining status quo’,” he said.

“The word status quo has been used so many times that in Khasi now, the word can be translated to ‘Sha bneng ruh em, khyndew ruh em – shu sdien lydui’ which means ‘Not heaven nor earth – just in between’,” he added.

Slamming the TMC, Tynsong said the claims made by TMC will never see the light of day.

“Whoever says they would scrap the MoU are traitors. TMC claimed they would do away with the MoU, but let me tell you – they will never get a chance to do it,” he added.
