NPP confident of snatching Mawphlang seat from UDP

Prestone Tynsong trained his guns at the UDP over the latter's claim of winning more than 30 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.

SHILLONG:

The National People’s Party (NPP) is confident of snatching away the Mawphlang seat from the United Democratic Party (UDP) even as it claimed that the latter’s position is unstable following a split in the party that resulted in the formation of UDP-Orginal, led by veteran politician Bindo M Lanong.

Addressing a public gathering during the general election meeting on January 28 organised by the NPP at Madan Shad Maw Kharshiing in Mawngap under Mawphlang constituency, Deputy Chief Minister and senior party leader Prestone Tynsong trained his guns at the UDP over the latter’s claim of winning more than 30 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.

He also ridiculed the UDP for making contrasting statements over the number of seats the party is expecting to win. While the UDP chief had earlier claimed of winning over 30 seats, its chief advisor, Bindo M Lanong, however, stated the stance of the party looks shaky and that it wouldn’t even manage to win 10 seats.

It may be mentioned that the UDP is a major partner in the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.

The public meeting was also attended by NPP candidate from Mawphlang Kennedy C Khyriem, Mawphlang MDC Lamphrang Blah, former MLA of Sohiong Samlin Malngiang and others.

The Mawphlang seat was previously held by Independent MLA SK Sunn until his demise in 2021. In the same year, his son, Eugeneson Lyngdoh Mawphlang contested the by-election on a UDP ticket and won. Following Lyngdoh’s decision to quit politics, the UDP fielded former technocrat Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah to contest from Mawphlang.
