Ardent withdraws fast after govt notifies Expert Panel on Quota Policy

Basaiawmoit was on an indefinite hunger strike from May 23 to pressurise the government to review the reservation policy, which according to him was “unfair” for the Khasi-Jaintia communities that is more in population compared to the Garos. 

SHILLONG:

Voice of the People Party (VPP) president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, on June 1, withdrew his indefinite hunger strike hours after the government notified the Expert Committee to study the State Job Reservation Policy.

Basaiawmoit was on an indefinite hunger strike from May 23 to pressurise the government to review the reservation policy, which according to him was “unfair” for the Khasi-Jaintia communities that is more in population compared to the Garos.

According to the notification, the chairperson and members of the committee shall consist of experts in constitutional law, economics, sociology, demographic studies and related fields which shall be notified by the government of Meghalaya.

The expert committee shall undertake a review of the state reservation policy by obtaining views from all stakeholders and conducting field visits to all parts of the state.
