Army’s pan-Meghalaya motorcycle rally sets off

SHILLONG:

A pan-Meghalaya motorcycle expedition — Freedom Ride- Trans Meghalaya Monsoon Odyssey – was flagged off on Wednesday to celebrate 75 years of India’s freedom — “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav,”

It will end on August 10.

The expedition is being organised by the army’s Umroi Brigade under the aegis of the Red Horns Division.

The ride will showcase gratitude and pay respect to freedom fighters and armed forces veterans who sacrificed for the growth of the nation. It is also aimed to motivate youths of the state to join the army as Agniveers and tread on the righteous and honorous Agnipath.

The expedition was flagged off by Lt Gen DS Rana, General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps at Tezpur and is led by Brig KM Shende, Station Commander, Umroi Military Station.

The ride will be flagged-in at Umroi by Governor Satya Pal Malik in a military ceremony on August 10.

The team of 25 bikers will cover all districts of Meghalaya travelling 1,100 km in eight days. The expedition team will also visit memorials of three famous freedom fighters of Meghalaya namely U Kiang Nangbah, Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma and U Tirot Sing to pay homage to these heroes who sacrificed their lives in India’s freedom struggle against the British.

The expedition also seeks to complete a journey through Meghalaya to celebrate the monsoons in the state and promote it as a biker’s destination. It will explore the ravishing beauty of the state by visiting the various unexplored sites.
