Assam limits R-Day celebrations; school children barred from parades

The order stated that the Republic Day programme will be limited to National Flag hoisting, speech by the guest of honour and ceremonial parade only.

GUWAHATI:

In view of the Covid-19 situation in the state, the Assam government, on January 22, limited the Republic Day celebration and barred school children from taking part in march past or ceremonial parades.

In a fresh directive, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) also banned all cultural programmes, award and prize distribution ceremonies during the R-Day celebrations across the state.

The order stated that the Republic Day programme will be limited to National Flag hoisting, speech by the guest of honour and ceremonial parade only.

“There shall be no involvement of school children in ceremonial parade or march past. Only trained police, security personnel and home guards, who are fully vaccinated, shall be allowed to participate in the ceremonial parade and march past,” the directive read.

It also limited gatherings to be limited to 1,000 (maximum) for state-level functions in Kamrup (Metro), 500 for district-level functions, and 200 for any other level functions.

“Both pre and post-Republic Day programmes may be avoided because of the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the state,” the directive further added.
