Assam reports 12 Covid deaths; active tally 41,118

The surge in Covid cases has set off alarm bells in Assam with 12 new deaths and the number of positive cases going up since January 1. The state has recorded a total of 7,929 cases pushing the tally to 6,78,057 on Thursday. The positivity rate is 12.92 per cent.

Assam has 41,118 active positive cases, a bulletin of National Health Mission (NHM) here said. Capital city Guwahati which falls under Kamrup Metropolitan district recorded the highest  1,716 cases on Thursday, the bulletin said. The state also recorded 12 death cases during the day, while the recovery rate stands at 92.81 per cent, it said.

Two deaths have been reported each from Jorhat and Nagaon, one each from Bongaigaon, Cachar, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Kamrup (Rural), Nalbari, Sonitpur and Tinsukia district.
486 Covid positive cases have been reported from Dibrugarh,  424 from Kamrup (Rural), 422 have been reported from Cachar district.

On January 19, the state has logged 8,072 Covid cases. The previous highest number of new cases on a single day was reported on Monday when 6,982 people tested positive. Although Covid hospitalisation’s in the state have not increased with the rise in cases, 16 related deaths were recorded on January 19- almost an eight-fold increase since January 11.
