CPI(M) demands accurate data on drugs seizure from Tripura govt

Lashing out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the CPI-M leader also alleged that members of the saffron party attacked a rally at Moharcherra under the Teliamura subdivision of Tripura’s Khowai district on April 27.

AGARTALA:

A day after Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb shared a successful report on crackdown against drug smugglers and drug abuse in the state, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) state committee secretary, on April 27, alleged the data to be “inaccurate” and demanded the government to produce white paper on it.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Jitendra Chowdhury urged the chief minister to initiate an impartial inquiry and compile accurate data about the seizures made, number of arrests and so on and so forth.

“In what quantity ganja, brown sugar and other narcotic substances were seized; how many youths’ lives were ruined after being trapped into the abyss of drugs? The government must produce white paper on the claims being made. Public should know what is actually happening. All the data that has been made public are baseless and fabricated,” Chowdhury said.

Lashing out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the CPI-M leader also alleged that members of the saffron party attacked a rally at Moharcherra under the Teliamura subdivision of Tripura’s Khowai district on April 27.

“We took prior permission for the rally. But all of a sudden, a section of unruly youths, including women who were BJP supporters in the name of ‘Swachha Bharat Abhiyan’, blocked our rally in front of the police. The police, instead of protecting us, prevented us from moving forward,” he alleged.

According to Chowdhury, the police were acting at the behest of ruling party-backed “armed miscreants”.
